Shirle Gottlieb has been a freelance art and theater
writer/reviewer/critic for over 25 years – ever since she completed her
Special Major Masters at Cal State University Long Beach.
What began unexpectedly while she was researching her interdisciplinary
thesis, “Creativity/Creative Process,” became a labor of love that continues
today. With a focus on “theatre and art in the context of culture and
psychology,” her premise reinforced her dedication to the arts in all
of their manifestations.
Since 1983, Shirle has written theater reviews for publications that
include the Long Beach Press Telegram, Drama-Logue, Back Stage West, Long
Beach Jewish Community Chronicle, the Gazette Newspapers, and stagehappenings.com.
She was honored as a CSULB Distinguished Alumna in 1985 and a City of
Long Beach Distinguished Art Critic in 1997. Shirle has been a member
of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle since 1999, and has written critical
analyses for the Long Beach Playhouse New Works Festival for 16 years.
Instructing her class at the CSULB Osher Lifelong
Learning Institute is another of her labors of love. For over a decade,
her students have “Followed the Yellow Brick Road” through theater and
art on campus and in the community.
More recently, she has written critical reviews for the finalists in
the “Pandora’s Box” Annual Festival of New Play Readings. Last but not
least, was the surprise “Awards Night for Shirle Gottlieb” the theater
and art community organized last Spring.
