The Towne Street Theatre, L.A.’s premiere African
American Theater Company, was founded in 1993 by actresses Nancy Cheryll
Davis, Nancy Renee, and mixed media artist Nathaniel Bellamy.
Originally located in a downtown loft for seven years, they now produce “on
the town” in various venues around Los Angeles - the Stella Adler Theater,
Stage 52, The Raven Playhouse, Theater/Theatre and The Attic. Over the
last 16 years, their mission of creating, producing and developing works
that reflect the unique African-American experience, has produced 32 plays. What
began as a three person team has expanded into a company of 15 that includes
producers, directors, writers, actors, designers and technicians.
Towne Street reached out to young people in 1999 with the inception
of the Musical Theater Camp for Kids 7-17, first held at St. Brigid Church
in South Los Angeles and was held this year at The Colburn School of Performing
Arts. Programming includes a 10 minute play festival, a Main Stage work
(a Black classic or an original piece), TST on Tour staged reading series
and TST Films.
Towne Street Theatre will proudly produce their 33rd production, the
world premiere of Langston & Nicolas, about the friendship of Langston
Hughes and Cuban poet laureate Nicolas Guillen, written by Bernardo Solano,
conceived and directed by Nancy Cheryll Davis and produced by Davis, Bellamy
and Renee, at the Stella Adler Theatre from March 19 to April 25, 2010.
